EPU is incuse on these coins, correct? I think it's just a scratch.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Lay a comb on a paper, draw a line across comb with pencil. The pencil mark will not mark the paper because it is in a valley, just like the letters are on the shield of penny.

Sorry you did not understand my example of the comb. My lack of explaining needs working on. But the point I was making is the pencil line is on the top of the comb, not the paper. Just pretend the line on comb is a scratch, it will look like the line has skipped over the paper, just like the scratch on your coin skipped over the letters not under them. I do hope the New Year will be better for you.
