Searching 50,000 LMCs is not my idea of a fun time.

That said, I think you're bound to find some unusual coins. Good luck.

I got through the first plastic jug last night. All LMC sorted by year and mint mark. One thing that I am discovering is that it's quite difficult to get the cents out of the container. They push against each other and won't fall out the neck. I had to cut the jug. It's also a pain to shake a 15 pound brick of metal for a few cents each time. =P

Not sure what can be done for the wine and whiskey bottles. The neck is much narrower. Might have to break them, unless someone has a different technique?

There are quite a few youtube vids showing how to cleanly crack the top off of a glass bottle.

Most involve tying a string around the bottle where you want it to separate.
Then soak the string in a bit of lighter fluid, or alcohol.
Be sure it does not run down the bottle. Then ignite; let burn until it goes out.
Immediately squirt or pour cold water on the bottle.
Or use an ice cube. It should quickly pop apart.
Might try this first on an empty bottle. If you score the bottle with a glass cutter,
it will make the separation easier.

That sounds like a really cool trick, and I will definitely try it tomorrow.

I started a new jug today. Totally different composition than the first jug. The first was predominantly 1970-1990. This one has been 99% pre-1970, with a healthy mix of heavily circulated wheaties. I was about to chuck the jug, which alas was sticky and dirty inside. There were four cents stuck to the bottom, and good thing I shoved my hand inside and pulled them out, because one was a 1919. There have been lots of AU and very nice RD/RB cents from 1965-1969.

If no variety hunters ever took a long slog through a pile of coins (or through a wall of ebay listings), then no passive collectors would have any varieties to buy.

Maybe it's just my biased optimism but.... there are probably a few coins in that lot which will make the hunt worthwhile.
