I'm getting tired of beating my head on the keyboard on this one (isn't helping my headache, either).. I can't find a picture of this variety anywhere. All the 1887 withdrawn types (shield reverse) look like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1887-SILVER-GRE...IN_W0QQitemZ350194576349QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item5189392bdd&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 (note the JEB at the bottom on the obverse). I know this can't be what they mean in the Spinks book, as that 'withdrawn type' is noted to have the JEB under, not on, trun, and "JEB on trun" is listed as a separate variety for this type. Does anyone have a picture or reference site for this variety? Or am I missing something here? thanks!

Thanks for looking, Bryan, but I think the JEB is in the same position as the first one. Here's the one from ebay I linked to: The initials seem to be in the same place. Did you see any where they were placed differently?

xshift, it's not a sixpence, it's a half sovereign from the same year, but it does at least reveal what they mean by "JEB on Truncation"

xshift ,i know what you mean...(note the JEB at the bottom on the obverse). next to the teeth, dots whatever you want to call them? i have 2 1887 Jubilee Head/Shield reverse . 1 has the J.E.B at the teeth and the other has the J.E.B just under victoria's dress line (like the half sov above)if I can get a good scan of the coins together I will post them up. (why have two coins you may ask? After reading about how people back then used to plate these sixpences and pass them off as half soveriegns,i was looking for a very bad one to get plated and have it inline with the others..ie the original -the counterfit - and the half sov )

I wonder how I forgot about this post? I looked this up a while back and I can't remember where I saw it but the JEB on trunk showed where I have added a red line to your photo xshift. I am going to try to find the image where I saw it and then will post a link. sorry that I didnt think to do it before.

The "JEB on truncation" variety was made when sixpences were accidentally struck with half-sovereign dies - technically, they're "mules". So it wasn't just the public that could get the two denominations confused - the mint workers did too, on at least one occasion!
So the sixpence with "JEB on truncation" obverse would look exactly the same as the half-sovereign obverse in QuickSilver's post.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thanks for all the information.. very helpful. Now I just need to find the coin in question again (hid them all before leaving on our trip!) and re-verify where the JEB is on it.
