I am pretty sure that that is a clashed die error, but I'm really new to error coins.

i don't think it can be a die clash because the memorial is not level on the obv. of the coin like it should be it if was a clash.

The coin was vandalized outside the Mint.

Mike's correct, post Mint damage. Could have been squeezed in some type of clamp pressing the Cents together, which tranfered the designs on the coins hign points. A clashed die would be opposite this, thus making this a impossible error. ~ Jim

Jim's description is correct. These vandalized coins are generally referred to as "squeeze jobs", "vise jobs", "sandwich jobs", and "hammer jobs". One or both faces are squeezed against another coin. In the case of this particular coin, it looks like the reverse was pressed against a textured surface while the obverse was pressed against another cent.
