I am not understanding something here. 1988 1c RDV-006 with the Flared G is a transitional variety, CPG FS-901. In many places, including PCGS, the rare variety is described as Wide AM. Aren't both RDV-006 and the 1988 standard RDV-005 correctly described as Wide AM?

It does, specifically this post by luvmyCAM: Discussion Link

PCGS seems to have started that incorrect name several years ago as they slabbed the 1988 RDV's as "1988 Wide AM RDV 006" Also the way the RDV's and Wide AM cents are illustrated in the Cherrypickers Handbook has caused some confusion. There is in fact some actual difference in the gap of AM on these cents but not enough for the casual collector to discern. It is almost insignificant.

So basically, PCGS started describing the 1988 RDV-006 as a Wide AM on slabs. They updated the terminology on the CoinFacts page to be Flared G, but the registry set entries continue to read Wide AM.

Thanks, spru, that's what I was looking for. =)

All the 1988's are WAMs.

I know the RDV-006 is nearly impossible to find in circulation. I generous collector gave me this one after over a decade of searching.

yes, all Memorial cent coins from 1959 to 1991 will be Wide AM strikes, whether they be business or proof strikes. that Close AM and Wide AM stuff goes from 1992 to 2008, with the variants being 1992,1998, 1999, and 2000
