Hey guys.

So I'll preface by saying that I'm trying to research this coin I did stumble into the "black beauty" nickels from the US in the late 50s, and took what info I could gather on the explanation for those coins into consideration here but alas this is a 1978 Canadian 5 cent so I want to see what else I can find from picking all your experiences
Pics do not make the stark difference in colour blatant enough. I'm person the coin looks black. And not from environmental damage or age. In comparison, I can't find a single other similar coloured coin from any year, nothing even close.

Upon closer inspection, I did notice something odd going on around the rim of the coin, it appears the rim of the coin is "eating up" the beads, with them half way embedded. That and the rim edge also something funny happening. That said, when viewed on edge, the coin looks perfect, no edge damage, just black.

Comments, thoughts, sharings?

Sorry about the pics, I struggle with the 300kb limit on my iPhone!

Thanks

I don't know anything about Canadian Black Beauties, but it should be noted that the coin composition is not the same. Canadian nickels of this time are entirely nickel while American nickels are 75% copper, 25% nickel. I believe that would make a difference in how the planchet reacts to things such as annealing.

That looks like a common affect of a slightly misaligned die and/or high pressure strike. It's nothing to get excited about.

Appreciate the info spru!

Nothing as to the distinct colour difference in this specific coin then if not a subject of the factors that effected those US coins of the day?

Coinfrog, unless I'm missing something I didn't catch anything to do with this coins very distinctly almost black coloring?

Thanks!

Update with more info.

It is magnetic.

It weighs 4.61g. All other "regular" examples I weighed as controls were between 4.48g to 4.50g.

I realize we're only talking slightly more than 1/10 of a gram here, but it seems more significant when considering all others were at or slightly below the weight spec from the mint.

The coin is clean and does not have any Cuds, dirt, grime or other buildup.

Thoughts?!

JimmyD, thoughts on the findings of those attributes? Are they at all sufficient to make any further educated opinions on the coin?
