I think it must have taken a "trial and error" period to get the zinc right. Blistering all over. Back to the drawing board. Just thought it was interesting on this 1982 D small date zincoin.

1982 and 1983 were bad years for plating issues.

Sometime late in 1983 the mint worked with the vendor to make a change and the zinc core has a tiny bit of copper added. It makes the plating adhere better and 1984 and later cents have fewer (certainly more than zero) of these problems. But 1982 and 1983 are a hot mess.
