I've been trying to put together a set of dollar-sized (38.1 mm) silver medals issued by the U.S. Mint (20th Century and beyond), but the medal honoring athlete Jim Thorpe has always been elusive. After years of searching, I finally found one in my price range on ebay earlier this month and wasted no time inserting it into my album.

Currently, the U.S. Mint seems to prefer issuing silver-eagle sized (40.6 mm) silver medals.

Thank you all for the kind words!

To Morgans Dad,

I was taken aback by the inscription on the Thorpe medal, describing him as the "IMMORTAL ATHLETE." Obviously, he was very highly respected, bordering on being worshiped.

Captainrich, You Wrote, Quote; "I was taken aback by the inscription on the Thorpe medal, describing him as the "IMMORTAL ATHLETE." Obviously, he was very highly respected, bordering on being worshiped. "

He Was Not the average Person when it came to Athletics, His accomplishments are Historic, While at Practice for Football one day Jim ran an UN-Official ( as they said ) a 9.1 second 100 yard dash, In the early 1900's, that was Unheard of.

People such as Jim Thorpe Should be looked up to, They Should be discussed, His feats Still are Un-Matched in 2025..... His spirit was the Driving force with-in Many, Worshiped, Why Not !!!!

Thank You, My Brothers and I have long admired His Physical Capabilities, Little known fact about Jim Thorpe, He was heading to the 1912 Olympics, Someone stole his shoes, He picked a Pair from the garbage pail, Miss-Matched shoes, He missed His train, He Ran to the event on foot and Ran the decathlon, He won that event Too.

He Still Inspires Many, Especially Us,...

Remember, We are Only limited by Our Own Boundaries We place on Ourselves, I Personally Push those Boundaries, In Every thing I do for All My Life, Be Well....

Great find. There are many from 1969 and 1970 that are obtainable too.
