I see that members can start a new topic, get numerous responses and then are able to edit their original posting,in some cases up to six months later. This sometimes makes threads appear disjointed, and respondants seem foolish.Everyone makes mistakes,or chooses the wrong words, and should be allowed 24hrs to edit their posting. If someone changes their opinion,or has something to add, then they should post again.

In general, I agree with you that people editing their original posting to remove discussion, context, or to make themselves appear less foolish at the expense of others, is to be discouraged. Editing by non-moderators is time-stamped, and if people must edit their post after someone else has posted to the thread, common courtesy would be to include a note in your edit explaining the reason for the edit.

But the ability for non-moderators to edit their own posts does have it's uses, so I'm not sure a blanket ban is the most effective solution.

My wantlist thread, for instance, is something I perpetually re-edit the OP of; I've kept it going for a couple of years now. The "discussion" which follows the OP does appear a bit disjointed and mysterious, as some of the coins the early posters talk about have been removed from the list.

But then, the purpose of this particular thread isn't discussion, it's letting folks know what my wantlist is. I believe re-editing the OP is certainly a better option than either making people search through the thread for the latest version of the list or posting a new thread each time the list changes.

Of course, eventually, threads become archived, where no-one except perhaps the administrators can edit them. Threads in "busy" subforums get archived quicker than threads in quieter forums; some subforums never get archived at all.

I probably edit 90% of my posts.

Of those edited posts, 90% are edited immediately to correct a typo or to add a thought that got misplaced. Sometimes a new poster slips in after me, but I do not think my edits affect what they have said.

The other 10% of my edited posts are to correct something that someone commented on. I, like many others here, will usually "strike-through" the bad information and make a comment. I feel this is important because it lets a casual reader only see good information; information that they might miss by not reading the entire thread.

Of course, these numbers totally disregards the Guess The Price contests I run, because I am constantly editing the leaderboard and current guesses!

That said, I do share your concerns. I have seen some people edit their post just to "bump" the topic. It is one of those things were you have to take the bad with the good.
