Restore Date On Really Worn Bust Dime?

Rollhunter1994 Valued Member United States 195 Posts	Posted 05/20/2009 11:29 am I have this REALLY worn out bust dime, and you can only see the tops of the numbers in the date. I was wondering if there is any way that I could restore the date on the coin, even if it damages the coin (It's probably worth less than 3 bucks anyway). Here are some pics of the coin Thanks! Silver etchants usually consist of nitric acid, cyanide compounds, concentrated iodine solutions(crystalline iodine, not the stuff you buy at a pharmacy) and other dangerous and nasty chemicals. I would never recommend any of these methods to someone not skilled in the use of dangerous chemicals Report this Post to the Staff

You'd have to mess around with very strong chemicals and that potentially could be VERY dangerous. And then what do end up with? What are your plans for the restored coin? Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 05/21/2009 4:47 pm I would bet that with a little work the die variety could probably be determined. I think a careful examination of the date with comparison to some 20's or 30's dimes you should be able to determine which decade it is from and on the reverse the position of the feather over the right edge of the 1 , the 1 over the denticals, the stem over the serif of the C, and the end of the scroll under the M will probably nail down the rev die. But from what I remember of experiments done on the forum, silver etchants work much more quickly than much safer nickel etchants and so more often than not the result from the attempted restoration of the silver coin is simply to erase all remaining detail of the date than restore it. -XoG Report this Post to the Staff
