I have a 1947 Canadian 5 cent piece, and I would like to know how it grades. I also want to know if Canadian nickles are silver?

Here are pics.

Canadian Half Dimes (they had them too!) were silver, sterling up to 1919, .800 from 1920 to 1921

Then pure nickel from 22-42,

Tombac (copper-zinc) due to the war effort from 42-44

Actually, the list is here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel...tion_.5B1.5D

As for the grade, I have no idea. My eye ain't that good.

I'd give it a VF-35.
It is made of nickle
But was struck in 1948! As shown by the '*' on the reverse.
Dies for the real 1948 had not arrived and they needed the coinage, so
the mint added the *.
Nice pick up with history

wow guys... VF35? maybe at ANACS? Not at ICCS
sorry, but F15 maximum.. no more details in hair,no hair onn the beaver left, too many nicks and scratches...and that is not being negative.

Thank you hhbkiddo. I have many coins that look like this one to which I have attached an F grading. To see the VF's above just shook my faith in my own ability to grade coins fairly.

Sure, grading is simply one's opinion, but it is nice to see that someone is of the same opinion from time to time.

Many of the Geo 5 cents were not struck well to begin with and this coin is better than F. I think that it would get a VF-20, maybe a little better at ICCS. There is still alot of fur on the beaver, as well as hair on the Obv.

wow.....
maybe you guys wish to grade all my nickels...the way you grade, there would be more MS66 than EF40ties.. and then, I offer to pay you 50% commission for every one you sell above MS60(your grade)
OH.. that goes for the rest of my coins also....only about 1000 of them...
Maybe Centsles would like to hire you?
