In a collection I inherited from my grandfather I came across a couple of old Roman coins (that is, I think they're Roman but of course would defer to the collective wisdom of this forum's users). As I understand it, the seam that I tried to capture in the photos below may or may not indicate a forgery. Any guidance on these - and I will post them separately - is greatly appreciated.

When asking about a coin, it is always helpful to post the diameter and weight. Pls add that information to this thread when you can. Thx.

You are right to be concerned about that seam. That would most likely be the result of this being cast rather than struck. However it looks to be modelled off of a Judean Shekel. Here is a link to a previous CCF thread with a similar item that had the seam mostly obliterated:

Also, here is a link to a real one:

Thank you, Spence. I'll be adding weight and diameter going forward. For this coin, the weight is approximately 11 grams and the diameter is 20.5 mm

Correct, it's a replica of a First Jewish Revolt shekel - a highly desirable and uncommon coin, hence quite popular with the counterfeiters - especially in Israel, where the selling of genuine ancient coins to tourists is difficult and filled with paperwork, but selling replicas is perfectly OK.

These coins have also been replicated down through the years by Freemasons and similar secret societies, for use in their rituals. The Masonic replicas tend to be more... imaginative... in their interpretation of the original design.
