Yeah it could be anything. We are dealing with an imperfect mint product here, and
it would be difficult if not impossible to conclude what exactly caused such extreme blistering.
As mentioned, I have many "blistered" Zincolns and most are from '83 & '84, nowhere near as
afflicted as Pete's coin here.
The microwave approach sounds fun. Not suggesting trying this at home, but from previous experience
with aluminum foil and steel forks accidentally placed in the microwave, it usually causes severe Arcing form
the metal to the interior walls and the resulting burn marks.
