Hello,

This is the first time posting here.

I came across this coin a few days again as change handed back to me. It's not the best quality. At first I didn't think there was anything wrong with this, but It felt thicker than it should be.

Looking at it closer, what I thought was Washington's ponytail, was what I just found is considered a Cud. After looking at the 2001 Vermont mint P coin online, I found that his ponytail lays flat against his neck, while this Cud flares outwards, under the words 'In God we trust', with his ponytail laying flat next to his neck.

I flipped the coin over and looked at what I thought were three trees with weird branches. Looking at the coin online, I found that the middle tree is in fact another Cud which extends under the upper date of 1791, and has a branch from the left tree, stamp over the Cud.

This is a strange looking coin and I'll keep it, but just out of curiosity, would it be worth anything more than 25 cents?

Thanks,
Steve

To CCF! Your coin was damaged by heat. It's PMD. Not an error or a Cud. https://cuds-on-coins.com/

Looks like damage from a high heat source.

Thanks for the reply.

If its damage from heat, why is there a buildup of metal with the stamp of the coin over it.

steve s, when clad coins are exposed to high heat such as a fire, the layers of cladding can separate, forming "bubbles" on the coin. That is what you are seeing on your coin.

Good questions @steve and welcome to CCF. We see this type of damage frequently posted here.

Thanks for the reply.

That makes a lot of sense and explains what I'm seeing.

It's still an unusual coin. I think I'll keep it.

Thanks again
