Hi folks. Is my coin genuine and if so in its state, worth getting checked/graded? Graded coins of this era seem to go for so much more, but I have no idea how much this would cost? 15mm diameter. Thanks in advance.

@dog, in addition to the weight, can you also pls post a couple pictures of the edge? I'm quite concerned by what looks like a parting line. Thx.

Welcome to CCF! Please post clear pics of both sides without the caliper or scale, just the coin. Better close up pics of the edge would help. The edge could have natural cracks or evidence of modern casting (fake). It's normal for these to be worn, some pitting, not worth grading in my opinion. In a high grade it could be worth grading. Some ancient coin collectors like to hold their coins raw, not have them put in plastic slabs. Edit: I looked on Forum Ancient Coins Fake Coin Reports. Here is pic of matching cast fakes. Forgers will use the same cast then add fake patina to make them look different. In my opinion yours is a cast match to these, fake, sorry. Notice your coin is struck off center like the cast fakes. Notice the same pitting spots I circled. If you posted a pic of other side that would help confirm fake. Maybe you can get a refund. Buy from well known ancient coin dealers like on Vcoins.com who offer returns. There's likely a couple UK dealers on Vcoins.

Not wanting to pile on @dog, but it addition to those Vernier calipers being unnecessary they could also scratch your coin. With that said, the pictures and your comment Quote: two halfs have been stamped out of line. indicate to me that you do indeed have a cast fake.

Well hopefully it wasn't a very expensive lesson. Quote: Not sure why the original pictures swapped out. Typically this occurs when you use the same filename for more than one photo.

Sometimes coin lots can have a mix of genuine and fake coins. It takes time but if you want you could compare each identified coin to the fakes on Forum Ancient Coins. Looks like you may have an Antonius Felix, some Alexander Jannaeus etc. Some are low grade, may be difficult to identify. Some collectors like to clean ancient coins. If you are interested in doing that there are online sites about how to clean coins without damaging them, including here on CCF.

Thank you all for the information and education. I tend not to buy single coins as I love getting bundles and picking through them. The joy for me is not profit but finding a gem in the bag of "rubbish" and then doing some research on it. Just looking into these coins gave me an education on the whole Roman take over of Judea and the fascinating story of what we do and do not know about Pontius Pilate. Fake or real, they will go into my collection with pride :-)

It is fun to sort through coins and learn about them. Genuine coins are obviously more valuable than fakes. Please if you keep a fake put it in a holder and write down that it's fake. In the future people will know. Sometimes dealers send fakes to melt down or throw them away so nobody gets deceived ever again, especially fake modern coins.
