I found this penny in my pocket the other day and it's clearly a different shade or color than all the other Shield pennies to 2012 no mint mark I don't know what's going on with it but please take a look at these pictures
A possible explanation is that pennies are minted from zinc blanks than have been plated with copper. Sometimes a zinc blank will melt into the copper bath. When enough of them melt, it turns the pure copper plating into a brass plating.
Looking at your second photo, I see some exposed zinc. Perhaps someone attempted to strop the plating from this cent.
I agree, possibly natural/environmental toning (copper can become many different shades, post mint) and/or as mentioned above the color of the copper itself, pre-mint, can also vary greatly.
