I have been going through My Liberty V nickels and I find myself unable to move past this particular coin without reaching out on its behalf to see if it can be helped in someway? As you will see in the photographs, there is a reddish/grey buildup on the surface of both the obverse and the reverse. As some of you know, I am still pretty new in my venture of coin collecting and learning the many aspects of Numismatics that there is are to absorb and learn. That being said my best guess for what this is would be, some sort of environmental damage? I would really appreciate the opinion of some other people who know more than I do and if possible, is there anything that can be done for this? I have looked closely at both sides of this coin with my 30x Jewelers Loupe and I believe with a lot of this not existing on the surface that this could possibly be an AU-50 Coin? Thanks as always

That looks like the typical red corrosion common to 3 cent and 5 cent nickels. It will only ever be a details coin. I soaked a similar looking nickel in both acetone and Verdi Care for many weeks and no change. I'm sure there are chemicals that would strip the red corrosion off, but it will likely end up just looking even worse.

Still a perfectly good hole filler!

Yep, the corrosion got into the surface metal and nothing to do about it.

Thank you Marve65 & adam126402 for your replies, I wish it was a little better news, but it is what it is, it just looks like a decent looking coin when you look with a magnifier and are able to see a little bit closer and possibly what it would look like had that not happened. Anyways, yes, it will be filling the 1896 hole in my Liberty nickels Until I get another one.

It probably spent some time in the cup holder of someone's carriage or buggy.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Could be, the Coca-Cola was a lot stronger back then!

This one is too far gone to save. Still a good hole filler though.

If nothing else, it's a good conversation piece.

Or make it a pocket piece and let it form a nice circulation cameo.
