Well I am a little confused with the PCGS link. It shows the top pop selling at Heritage for $115K in 2006 but just below the images of the link it shows an auction record of $36,750 for a coin grading MS-66RB in a David Lawrence auction on 9/23/2018. That is less than 7 years ago. I'll be watching to see what it hammers at.

I own an 1877 Indian cent in a PCGS MS66RB holder. Comparing the two, I think I prefer mine, mainly because of the surfaces. It can be seen in an earlier thread here: https://goccf.com/t/408082&SearchTerms=1877,1c

Would be curious about how you think the two compare as they are basically equivalent grades according to CAC.

My first reaction upon seeing OP coin was head scratching on how it got the cac gold bean.

NS coin blows this one out of the water.

Lovely coin. It will be fun to see what it hammers at.

Comparing the OP coin and NS example I by far prefer the look of NS coin.

Numismatin Student, were you asking me for my opinion on your coin vs. the auction coin?

Welcome to the CCF Phreddy. I was asking anyone who wants to share an opinion. It isn't often that one sees a coin that is top pop in RB and would welcome your thoughts on the coin on this thread's place in the register. Always appreciate the thoughts of an experienced collector and grader. The pcgs coinfacts page shows photos of 3 MS66RB examples including my coin. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...7-1c-rb/2128

Thanks for the welcome Numismatic Student. I'll compare your Indian Head we'll call the NS coin vs. the Auction Coin (AC) When I evaluate a coin the first thing I look for is what I call a "Distraction". A distraction would be any scratch, blemish, tic mark that draws your attention away from the coin. I look at the details, then the fields, and finally the rim. I look for a good crisp strike. If all is good, this would start at MS65. I then try to find any possible scatch, blemish I can find on the coin. If none, MS66. Anything like toning or what I refer to as "Dramatic Toning" starts to push the coin up. An example of dramatic toning would be a Columbus 50C commemorative with the ocean surrounding the ship is toned aqua, which plays into the theme and artistic composition of the coin. If the coin is blemish free with the naked eye, MS67. Dramatic toning and blemish free MS67+, possible MS68. .... Now for the comparison of the NS and AC coins. In my opinion, both are strong MS66's. The AC has a blemish mark on the eye brow and below the T, but in my OP not distracting. I think copper is more forgiving to blemishes than silver or silver finish coins. Those blemishes would drop a grade if on silver. I love the color and "grain" on the AC coin. Has the character of old stained walnut. And finally the OGH and gold CAC finish the look for a very special coin..... The NS coin has a few nick's on the ribbon bow on the reverse. Are they distracting? hmmm not really. I would need a better pic of the Obverse to see the cheek for scratches. If the cheek is clear and if it had no nicks on the bow I could see an MS67

I just think that expecting $35K-$55K is overpriced especially in todays economy and thoughts of $100K are just ridiculous in my opinion.

@MisterT: You might be missing that it's a CAC Gold sticker and will be valued as a Top Pop when it hammers. I'd expect MS66+ value with the Gold sticker. $50k seems a lock and up near $100k is certainly possible.

In my mind this coin goes for no less than $35K+, valued at somewhat more than PCGS 66RB w/Green CAC. It could get to $50k with the bp - maybe yes, maybe no. I'd be surprised if it went any higher than that, but I'm rooting for the seller that it does exceed $50k with the bp. I'm now one of the 32 watching it. Just for fun, I just placed a bid, but it's WAY LESS than $35k. No more bidding by me on this coin.

By the way, the one in my collection is a "normal" PCGS MS65RB with a green CAC sticker and an Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Redundant? Not really. John Albanese and Rick Snow weigh the various grading factors differently from each other. As such, there are CAC stickered IHC's that Rick won't sticker, and there are PS stickered coins that JA won't sticker. In my mind, an IHC having both stickers is having the best of both worlds. They do have tremendous respect for each other. I do believe that the auction coin would indeed PS, since the first three feathertips look strongly struck, and everything else looks good. What I can't easily determine from photos is the die state and approximate percent red of the auction coin. Obviously, the more red the higher the value. Rick says mine is 90% red. But then again, mine is "only" a 65, not in the same league as the auction coin.

I see my max bid was outbid just 7 minutes after I placed my bid. I'm now "safe"!
