I am having a tough time narrowing down this old coin from Vietnam - the holder it came to me in says Annam, which I now know was the old western word for Vietnam. I am able to translate every character but the first - " ? Vinh Thong Bao" - and it is those first two characters that seem to help most with identification. But, as I understand it, even with the translation, there were many uncatalogued private issues of coins like this so I may be out of luck anyway. At this point, I'd be satisfied enough with help dating it. If anyone has something to share, it would be - as usual - much appreciated.

I think it might be a Japanese mon coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces20859.html

It could be this one: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces283929.html

That would fit with what was apparently a flow of Japanese mon coins to Vietnam in the 17th century. From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_cash

"Between 1633 and 1637 the Dutch East India Company sold 105,835 strings of 960 cash coins (or 101,600,640 van) to the Nguyen lords in Vinh Lac Thông Bao (---) and Khoan Vinh Thông Bao (----) coins. This was because the Japanese had restricted trade, forcing the Southern Vietnamese traders to purchase their copper coins from the Dutch Republic rather than from Japanese merchants as before."
