I got myself one of the common gold coin designs that I was missing. The most interesting one for me because I like the originality of the incuse design.

Have avoided better looking $5 because I could not judge the contrition. This smaller one was cheap so I got it. I know there are many forgeries, about looking for tooling marks. This seems genuine. But how do I evaluate the condition of this coin? The fields are the high parts. How does wear count on those, and on the engraved images?

One of the leafs between the claw and the AR of dollars is weak but that seems to be common in this date. The incuse indian and eagle are nice, the fields have some bumps and show that the coin slid on surfaces. With sun hitting it.

I had to lower the size of the images to be under the 300 KB.

Field luster is the first thing that disappears at AU-58 because the fields are the highest points of the design. That is a starting place which will set the coins in either AU or Mint State. MS-60-63 coins can look rough since the contact marks are high up and in focal points. This design does not come flashy with high luster like most other series, so Gem and up are graded mostly on hairlines and field marks rather than original flash.

For your coins, I would grade them AU-58 and AU-55 respectively. I see no field luster but there is significant sharpness in detail.

I'm thinking AU as well.

Than you. But sorry if I was not clear. I showed two photos of the same coin. The second photo is with the sun hitting it from the side (up). It highlights traces of wear on the fields that are perpendicular to the light.
