I bought this dime for cheap as a potential reference coin. Under magnification, I am leaning towards 1928 Large S, but I am unfamiliar with that particular variety. What do you guys think? From what I saw on published examples, a small S is around the size of the lowest leaf, and this one appears considerably bigger.

The serifs identify it as a large S.

Ok, thanks. That's kinda what I thought, but it's good to have confirmation from someone who knows Mercury dimes. =)

When I tried to compare the mint mark to the PCGS catalog of small and large S coins, I got a little confused in the AU and below coins. Some of them appear to have a fairly large S mint mark, but are classified as ordinary 1928-S dimes. Maybe they are just not correctly attributed? Or maybe the Large S attribution requires the variety attribution fee?

All these 3rd parties love attribution fee, and I really love picking up unattributed varieties.

I'm with you there, I have quickly learned to appreciate a good cherrypick. =)

According to NGC, about 5% of 1928-S dimes have the large mint mark, so I am happy to have one for my reference library, even in this worn condition.
