I noticed beginning in 2014 and 2015, the red leatherette material on the Specimen sets & Silver Dollar Proof sets are made of this horrible material that eventually degrades over time and emits gases over time that affect the coins. Also, the leatherette becomes greasy/sticky and easily gets damaged with light handling.

My coins in some of these sets are destroyed from the gases/toning so I suggest you separate the books from the coins.

The leatherette used between 1998-2006 were disastrous, just falling off at the smallest touch so you have to handle them with care. Then they used this hard durable material between 2007-2013. Then 2014-2015 they were garbage again with cheap leatherette.

My question is for those who collect these sets, can you check the years after 2016 and tell me what year they switch materials back to more durable leatherette again? I don't want to open all my sets as I've packaged them up. I want to know which years still use the bad quality leatherette so I only open those up to examine the coin's condition

Just checked, it seems they fixed the problem in 2016 for the red cases going forward. It's a different harder material again. They also gave the lower-tier Silver Dollar Proof Set for 2016 the Genuine Leather Black Case, likely because of problems and complaints from the two previous years (it's usually red).
