American Numismatic Society - After they learn to count them in elementary school, most students forget about coins. American middle and high schools rarely revisit coins as economic or historical objects, leaving their potential untapped. University professors (many of them graduates of the ANS Summer Seminar) find themselves tasked with (re)introducing students to numismatics and are increasingly doing so in novel and engaging ways. Jane Sancinito (Assistant Professor of History at University of Massachusetts Lowell and 2015 Summer Seminar Alum) looks at some examples of contemporary numismatic education, breaks down what skills faculty hope their students are learning, and explores why coins are so important in the classroom.
