NGC - Coin of the Day: On this day in AD 4, Roman Emperor Augustus adopted Tiberius, his eventual successor. This Silver Denarius showing Tiberius was issued under his rule (AD 14-37). You can find this coin in a Heritage Auctions sale: https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/r...1518-23096.s

That's a really high quality one. Mine is lower grade but stll a good example.

The emperors were also the high priests of Roman religions with title Pontifex Maximus as on the reverse with seated Livia. When Rome became Christian the Catholic Church took the same title for the pope.

This coin type is sometimes called the tribute penny from the King James Bible where Jesus was shown a coin and said "give unto ceasar what is ceasar's, give unto God what is God's. In the Greek texts the word denarius is used but it's uncertain if the denarius was a Tiberius or Augustus. It's assumed it was a Tiberius who ruled at that time.
