About nine days ago, I bought a bunch of cheap PCGS slabbed proof nickels on ebay. Each was $1 plus $5 shipping. I bought eight in total. I wondered if the seller would agree to combine shipping at that point, but $6 for a slab was still agreeable to me. The offered delivery service was USPS Ground Advantage shipping with tracking. Due to the new screwball ebay policy about forcing your credit card to be charged within 1 hour, I ended up getting automatically charged for $8 plus $40 shipping. The seller combined the slabs into one or two orders. However, no refund for combined shipping. Also, the eight slabs were all listed as Shipped (Untracked). No USPS GA with Tracking as I paid for. Last night, I happened to browse that seller. Several of the same slabs are re-listed with slightly different pictures. Obviously those same slabs are supposed to be on their way to me in an untracked USPS envelope. Am I getting scammed? This seller has almost 300 positive feedback, but it sure does look suspicious that the same slabs were re-listed, and my package is untracked even though I paid for full tracking. Is there something smart I should do in this situation, or should I just wait to see if the slabs eventually arrive in the mail?

I hope not, but something certainly feels a bit off here.

It could be a scam or the seller may be using stock photos of slabbed coins in their listings, reach out to the seller for shipping/tracking details. If you're unhappy with the seller's response, get ebay involved.

Good idea.

Not that it stops people, but you aren't supposed to use stock photos of certified slabs. In my opinion, I paid for a specific slab in the photos, not an "equivalent" slab (which usually isn't equivalent, even if the grade is the same).

Did the listings have a "stock photo" warning buried in the description? I have seen that a few times and just went on to the next listing in my search. There was no sense in reporting it, I do not have that kind of pull. At least a couple of times I was clued to it by the blurred certification number.

Well, here is a twist. USPS just dropped off two little retail Ground Advantage envelopes from the seller. So they did ship with tracking, they just didn't bother to upload the tracking number into ebay. Why they sent two envelopes when the slabs would have fit in one envelope, who knows? These are the two slabs that were not re-listed by the seller. Perhaps I will reach out this afternoon and inquire what happened to the other six purchased slabs, which appear to be re-listed.

Progress, at least. Thank you for the update.

Just wanted to update this thread and say that the missing coins got resolved. The seller said that ebay didn't notify them properly of the sale. The six slabs were packed up, shipped, and received. Case closed! =)

APMEX actually photoshops coins into slabs on ebay, ebay lets them.

Quote: Sounds like a weasel excuse to me. To me as well. The eight auction wins were in the cart, paid for in a single transaction, so the invoice should have had eight items. I think maybe the seller was unhappy at getting $1 at auction for each slab. They did keep the $5 shipping for each slab, even though combined shipping was possible. I knew that might happen, though, and $6 for an ordinary PCGS slab of a common modern coin seemed fair. I wasn't out to rake anybody over the coals. That is atrocious, particularly because it probably takes them more time to Photoshop the slabs than it would to just take proper pictures. They are doing huge volume, though.
