ok, thanks, further to the 200, were they all found in the early days in Perth in the "mule frenzy" or in a relatively short space of time? Is this where the 6000 mintage comes from? On this hunters search? My mind boggles at even trying to do the maths on coins found / searched / total coin pool etc. I have noticed an online seller who seems to have a neverending supply of mules. Thanks for the tip on the acetone. Any ideas on the RAM info?

Yes, most were found in Perth during the initial feeding frenzy. He's told me of the hours he used to spend at Burswood and the mind boggles, he has far more stamina than I do. Regarding the RAM they have apparently always been tight lipped about things.
Regarding your wallets. Whether they are essential or not is entirely up to you, it is, after all, your collection. Dont think you can go too wrong with them though, every year coins are ruined in them because of PVC so there's less and less. Find some good sets, re-holder the coins and sit on them for a decade and you may well do OK.

Now thats what I call first hand - non urban myth info - thank-you - very valuable to me in the trenches of mule research, please oh please write an anecdote / story about you / this intrepid hunter and the general "mule frenzy"...'the Burswood days - I think it's history and what a pity no-one followed the 1930 at the time etc. Post it here or send it to me for publishing - I'm totally up for reciprocal links from other pre-decimal / decimal sites - I have good google rank and acknowledge all works. Also I need advice on Post-Grad Numismatic courses? I'm very interested.

these 2000 mules continue to get good prices on "the bay". And, the 2000 $1 had a low mintage anyway. One seller is predicting that this mule will go the way of the 1930 penny - ========================= Item number: 260522410522 - 2000 $1/10C MULE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT OFFICAL ERROR COIN asking $1,250.00 CURRENT VALUE IS $3750 IN EF, THAT PRICE IS ALMOST ONE YEAR OLD ! THERE ARE APPROX 400 OF THESE COINS KNOWN TO EXIST. THEY ARE ULTRA RARE TO START WITH, LET ALONE IN THIS CONDITION. THIS COIN IS A TRUE 2000 $1 MULE COIN, WITH DOUBLE RIM. THIS COIN HAS VITUALLY UNLIMITED INVESTMENT POTENTIAL DUE TO THE SCARCITY AND TYPE OF ERROR COIN IT IS. THE 1930 PENNY HAD A MINTAGE OF 3,000 AND IF PURCHASED IN THE SAME CONDITION AS THIS YOU WOULD BE LOOKING AT $120,000 DOLLARS TODAY. ========================= Item number: 260523451783 closed at $31.50 ========================= Item number: 370274344480 AUSTRALIAN 2000 $1/10c MULE COIN ABOUT UNCIRCULATED asking AU $5,500.00 ========================= I don't have a recent copy of Macca's: does he give a CV for this mule ? If so, what, please ? My Renniks 2007 doesn't even mention the mule. Peter in Darwin

The 2000 $1 mule is not 'ultra' rare. I have found 7 while noodling. A friend of mine on the Aussie forum has over 30. Another found her first one a couple of days ago.
I think the number would be closer to 6000, not 400.
If you want a mule, I would pay no more than $400 for (say) VF. This price has been fairly stable for a number of years now.
Higher prices are achieve from better grades and centering of the stamp. A good EF might go for $700. Uncs don't come up all that often, but I think $3000 would not be overvalued.

I have 2 myself and I haven't really searched for them. I got both of mine in change for donuts (3 years apart). Maybe I should eat more donuts

True UNC coins don't exist on the market, not coins that are like brand new from a roll. Someone did get 3 from a roll and they are all well and truly being held onto
6000 is the accepted number yes. They are still rare in any condition better than very worn I mean Very Fine

I have found a couple myself over the past two years.
However, with millions of new 1 dollar coins being put into circulation each year, these mules must surely be getting harder to find.

I have never bothered noodling $1 coins, have only ever stuck to silver. Other than the mule and NCLT is there anything worth searching for? Chances of finding a mule are very low to near impossible so if I'm not finding at least one coin per 1000 coins I can see myself getting thoroughly bored with it.

That's a huge pity Mob of Roos. I wish you the best of luck for that. I've had similar issues a couple of times but with coins less than $80. I paid $512 for an EF with lustre on ebay maybe 12 months ago. It was an average picture, but from it I could tell that it didn't have knocks. I've been told that PCGS would grade it between AU53 - AU58 (which is considered aUNC). The Mule is the one coin to get hold of if & while you can whilst they're still cheap.
