At first I thought this coin had just been marked up pretty good. But it looks to me as if the Coin has been struck on top of The scratches and gouges in the planchet? Please give me some other opinions on this. What

Although your pictures are not very clear but from what can be seen it looks like a series of scratches throughout the area in question, in my opinion it is a damaged coin.

I agree, appears to be post-strike damage--possibly of an intentional nature.

The letters in EDITH are incuse (sunken). The scratches are across the coin surface above the letters.

a full coin image would help here, but for the moment it sure looks like damage (scratches)
