Looks like acid or some other kind of corrosive damage.

Looks to have suffered from exposure to a corrosive environment--lost some metal, leading to the textured look and the lighter weight.

Yep - the coin was somehow corroded to reach this state.

We will never know the exact cause. Value is 1 cent.
