I bought a small jar of wheat cents at a yard sale. I paid $20.00 for approx. 800 wheat cents, about 600 are pre-1940. I just separated the coins by date and found 4 1909VDB. The coin pictured has a reverse crack, is it an error or damage? These are the first 4 1909VDB I have seen. If you could spare a grade it would also be appreciated. Does this crack hurt the value?

Congrats on the nice find! I'm not sure, about error/die break though.

I don't think that it is a Die Crack! From what I can see in the pictures, I am nearly 100% certain that it is a Lamination peel/crack due to a flawed planchet. Also, I doubt that it would really hurt the value or help the value of the coin.

Looks like a lamination peel to me. No less than VF30 probably an EF40 even with the flaw. nlp

Lamination. Hard to tell from the organic gunk in the wheat heads but, looks AU.

Hi,

The "lamination" does hurt the value of the coin. The coin would go for VF money with the flaw in it, especially since they are easy to come by without flaws.

Thanks,
Bill
