Dearborn Moderator United States 95443 Posts	Posted 04/23/2025 1:57 pm I thought the proof coins are struck once and the edge lettering are impressed into the edge at the same time. Business coins are struck twice - and the edge lettering is added in a separate operation. Which leads me to a question, I have never looked to see, but, with proofs the edge lettering should always be in the same direction (assuming 'A') and we know that the business strikes have the edge lettering upright or upside down Collecting since 1972. Business coins are struck twice. The edge lettering is not struck. For proof coins, it is formed by the collar during strike. For business strikes, it is applied by a roller after the coin has been struck. This is why their edge lettering can be in either position.
