TIA Could any one tell me if this is some kind of error? There's a gouge around Trust and the 1942 and S appear double to me

Looks like all circulation damage. The date issue may be smearing of metal.

as near as I can tell, it is damage. but better closer in focus would help.

So even with the poor picture nobody thinks this may be a de-lamination strike ?

With the poor picture, it could be a stain or something else. Better pictures would help. So far, it looks pretty normal.

If it was damage then it's strange to me the letters are still there.

Perhaps a lamination loss before strike? Odd that the U is well defined, but there is metal missing from inside the curve.
