Quote:i have $400 in junk silver. I see a slabbed CC- Morgan silver dollar for $400 do you think that they would take my 90% in trade? Just curious, SDcoinguy - $400 face junk silver? And what year/grade CC Morgan?

$400 total junk value - have 60 quarters valued at $400 at todays spot price.
i dont have a specific coin in hand yet - I'm going to the coin shop after work today to see what they have and depending what they have, will they let me trade my 90% - I know some places will give you a cash buy out option - so if I asked for cash, they might give me instead of SPOT $37/oz - they will buy it from me at $30/oz or something. OR they say, if I chose to buy one of their coins, they would give me more in trade value, make sense? So, I have to see what they will do. I will post later on what was/is available.
however, my goal is to aquire a nice CC morgan! I have never owened one before and this could be a good chance to get one

but to have my original questions answered - is converting your 90% junk silver to slabbed coin better in terms of long term investment. I would assume so? an MS64 slabbed morgan would retain and increase in value over time compared to keeping junk 90% since that's more tied to the bullion market - right?

Quote: If the PCGS coin will make you happy, then do it, regardless of any financial upsides! With the appreciated silver value you have attained, I believe you deserve to reward yourself. Yeah I agree. It may not be wise but if you really have your heart set on a coin then go for it. But the way I look at it, and everyone is different, is my bullion allows me to justify some collecting. Yes it does limit the collectables I can buy but I'm not wealthy so I have to also have to bank metal to leave a Legacy for my loved ones, at the least. Once I croak they can do what they want with it but my son also has an interest so hopefully he'll either keep it going or shop around for the best prices. I do buy and store a fair amount of 90% junk silver. In fact this month alone I have 3 separate orders coming in. Lately its been junk metal and 10 oz bars. But if I was young and had my heart set on a slabbed collectable I'd trade for it.

thank you guys for your insights.
sadly the coin shop did not have any CC Morgans.
he was going to give me $295 for my 59 quarters - but since I told him I wanted to keep it in house, he gave me $325 store credit to work with. (melt was $392)
I ended up with a PCGS 1879 $1 MS63 - he valued at $100 and my first slabbed half dollar - NGC 1942-D MS 66 - he valued at $225
I think I did pretty good?
ill try and upload the pics

Hey SDcoinguy, congrats on your trade. Being happy is the most important aspect.
I think your LCS was a bit low on the silver buy - you got about 85% of spot at $36 in trade. The $295 offer in cash would have been robbery in my opinion. Sometimes I realize there are not other options. Perhaps if you buy / trade more from him he will give you a better deal as a repeat customer.

We've all bought, traded, and sold, and below market at one time or another. Your loss is very minor in comparison and what matters is being happy with your MSD.
None of us get into collecting to get rich. Most of us will probably die with our collections intact.
I would get prices from 3 different sources were I to sell bullion and I'd avoid pawn shops most of all.
