American Numismatic Society - Alessandro Cavagna (Università degli studi di Milano) discusses the career of Giovanni Dattari (1853-1923), a man rightfully renowned for his awe-inspiring collection of Alexandrian coins and his monumental Numi Augustorum Alexandrini catalogue. But that's not all - this amazing coin collector also acquired and collected hundreds, if not thousands, of Ptolemaic coins. While an inventory comparable to that compiled for Alexandrine coins is still elusive, references do exist that substantiate the Italian's interest. Remarkably, these references suggest that for at least two decades, many coins of this series found in Egypt were considered by him, often analysed and just as frequently donated.
