The number two looks curvy, and the number eight top is smaller. The coin dealer told me it might be a small date.

Your dealer is wrong.
The easiest way is to go by the distance from the rim to the 2.
If it is close, then it is a Large Date.
If you can fit another number in the space , it is a Small Date.
