Welcome to CCF!

Wish I lived where I could look for ancient coins in the ground!

Better close up pics would help. If it appears have lamination with copper underneath likely a fouree.

If you have a local coin store nearby with XRF they could analyze the metal content.

@tig, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that getting XRF could be useful, but you could also do a specific gravity test yourself if you have a more precise scale.

I don't believe, it's a fouree . I have a few of them and a few with a black coating on the coin similar to your example. More than likely it's some type of silver oxide/silver sulfide coating. All I know, it's hard to remove.

The good news is that finding a "Tribute Penny" in any shape or form is remarkable - Congrats!
