I bought this off of USA C B for 30.00 plus 1.65 for shipping. I later found out that it was the Newcomb-12 Large Letters variety. Pretty nice surprise. The Newcomb-12 variety was not noted in the listing. It was graded at Good. Would it straight grade? https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...ers-bn/36988

@e&v, while this coin is a specific variety, it seems like your question is more directed to the condition and grade so I'm going to move this thread over to that sub.

Sorry that I can't help you with a grade. The ding at 12 o'clock is unfortunate, but hopefully not too extreme to prevent straight-grading.

Nice coin for the price, Errers. I'm not sure that it would straight-grade - some of the scratches seem intentional.

I'd grade it VG10 details net AG3 to G4.

My early coppers are not encapsulated, so not an expert here, but, as far as I understand TPG criteria, this coin would not straight grade. It shows a fair bit of surface distractions which they would possibly describe as 'damage'.

Note am 1831 N-12/1, R-2 sold this WE at the EAC sale:

This could straight grade but given the value of the coin, it would not be a good candidate for grading. The fees would exceed the value of the coin even in a straight graded holder.

Thank you both for your comments. I don't plan on getting it slabbed by a TPG. GERMANICVS, so it'll grade VG details, but the net grade is AG3 to G4? Just trying to understand it better.

one was remember that copper is fairly soft so it doesn't take much to take hits and marks banging around in a pocket with other coins for decades. could it grade straight? I think its just too much even in that lower grade. the almost hole at K12 could have been intentional in an attempt to make a necklace as well as some of the marks near the rim in the fields from K4-K7 obv could be intentional as well. they don't look like typical marks from getting knocked around. there's a lot of history here.
