Greasy Fingers Pillar of the Community United States 7149 Posts	Posted 05/19/2025 11:12 pm Last few years I've been concentrating on completing the half dollar early commemorative set, with just a few left and not seeing any to my liking (in the upcoming auctions) my attention turns to learning/filling the Trade dollar slot in my 7070. NGCs Variety Plus section shows a 1875 micro S, so here's my question.... Does 1876 have maybe a small S vs. large S or I'm I not seeing this mint mark correctly ? Looks like a micro S to me. I am not an expert by any means with the Trade dollars which is why I opted for a certified PCGS example. I got stung back in 1990 with a counterfeit 1876S. The obverse and reverse had the correct types for the date but the coin was underweight. A specific gravity test confirmed it was not silver and a file to the edge proved it to be a brass base metal with a silver plating. I take it that you are aware of the basic differences with the type 1 and 2 obverses and reverses and which dates they are paired with? One basic rule is that no genuine Trade dollars have a type 2 obverse paired with a type1 reverse. There is a weird 1876 proof example that exists in which the hand has 4 fingers (type2) but the scroll points left (type1) this obverse is paired with a type 2 reverse. Oddly enough a proof 61 is about the same value as a MS-63. I don't know what your budget is but this transitional obverse and low mintage makes it a very desirable coin in my opinion. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...v-cam/941720 Also while looking at the 1876S business strike coins there is indeed a large S and small S variety along with different pairings of obverse and reverse dies. I just clicked the link to greatcollections to see what you were interested in. That is a type 2 obverse paired with a type 2 reverse and small S. Shame about the cleaning hairlines on the obverse. The reverse looks better. Like you, I opted for a slabbed details coin because it fit my budget at the time. I went for a 1877 AU details-mount removed for $270. The mount was removed from the edge so you don't notice any damage on the obverse or reverse. I can live with that. Edited by MisterT 05/20/2025 06:58 am Report this Post to the Staff

I'm still in the learning phase with trade $...may be 6 to 8 months or more down the road before I pull the trigger (looking for a nice AU/MS example)... The cleaning hairlines makes it a coin you would probably regret owning. A nicer example will come along.
