Well, took the plunge today and invested in a White MXT. My son and I are using this hobby as a bonding thing. He likes to dig, so it is a bonus for me! Had to show him how to do it right though, so as to restore everything properly (he's only 11). We went for just an hour to a local private beach (our subs). I didn't want to burn him out the first time. We only netted $2.13 in clad, but there is a learning curve. I dug EVERYTHING...like most people suggested. Only came out with one (blue) pop tab, but how poetic, that it was the first thing I found...welcome to detecting! If my son really takes to it, I might get him his own detector...we'll see.

From what I've read here and seeing that you're from MI, the shores by the lakes might be a good place, too

My first trip out to the beach I found 1 Cent a spoon and a whole bunch of trash. So by comparison you did great.

Thanks nohope587,

It gives me "hope" now that I know I did better than your first outing. I have been lurking here a while and seen your many impressive hauls. You are definitely "at one with the force". I am just getting the feel of my new "sopwith camel", and once I get her figured out, I plan to take my boy to some pristine hunting grounds I have secured. My township historical society gave me written permission to detect all the old sites (including some cemeteries) as long as I restore everything properly, and give them some trinkets for their displays. They said I can choose what to give, and these places are OLD, and haven't been frequented by anybody in the last 40+ years. Should (hopefully) be a "target rich environment". You guys are right though...this stuff is addicting!
