Issued under the aegis of Philippopolis, the obverse depicts Julius Marinus, father of Philip I (the Arab) who his son had deified. The particular Philippopolis referred to here was built atop an insignificant settlement located in the southern reaches of present day Syria which had been the home of the future emperor. Intended as a monument to his familial roots, construction hadn't been completed by the time of Philip I's death, though, and the site subsequently stood abandoned for many centuries.
