Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm Dave. I have a regarding the new style of Buffalo nickel. I was recently told that due to the anatomically correctness of the buffalo, their has arisen a controversy. Some folks were offended in the fact that the buffalo was minted with it's genitalia intact. What can any of you tell me of this topic and if there is any collectability in any coins that have the buffalo in full male glory.

Well dog gone it! I am a moderator and CAN NOT respond like I wish I could!!! And boy could I respond to this one!!! I will say these folks had best do a little more checking as I have never seen a buffalo on a coin that was not physically correct in every way and thats including our famous Indian/Buffalo classic from 1913 thru 1938. Can't help but wonder the same group of folks would think of the Standing Liberty quarters in Type 1? And do I ever have some great coins from the Darkside I could share with them!!! Can't say no more....Moms watching!!!

Dave old buddy, I'll give it to you straight. You have friends or associates who evidently like to either miss-lead you or 'pull your chain' so to speak. It's a joke and nothing more. Now if you really want to make their day (the people who told you this) go back and tell them this type of nickel is an "error' coin and worth a great deal of money. Stop right there and let their immagination and possibly greediness take over. Have fun collecting and enjoy the hobby.

You know Old Dan you have got me to thinking! Canada just released (a few months ago) a Whitetail deer doe and fawn. Now I know why they didn't use a big buck on that coin. They had to be politically correct didn't they? But now I am upset as I just realized that Doe is physically ALL there so I must be offended that they not only displayed that deer without any clothes but she was also buck naked in front of her child!!! Just disgusting! What is the world coming too?

Dave Welcome! There are probably a group or groups who will collect anything. To them an animal with any defining characteristic might make their day. That being said, unless you know where to find those people and how to hype a particular coin, it's not an issue. Some people will only collect error coins, and narrow that field to only lincoln cents. Some will only collect proof coins that have to be absoultely perfect. Anything is collectible to someone. This anatomically correct buffalo you ask about might have a small audience out there somewhere who search for the best specimen but I have never heard of it until you mentioned it. It's a Buffalo nickel and the mint didn't give it anything God didn't, but some folks will of course find a way to be offended by anything. Being polictically correct is impossible these days. Enjoy collecting whatever you like. I am off to find the most perfect specimen of Margarita. This could take a while! Margaret

What a funny idea. This reminds me of the "Chirstmas is offensive" story. I really don't believe that these folks exist. No where else in the world are people offended, "only in America"? I think not, LOL, but if the newspapers get a wiff of this they can beat up the story to a real controversy. Says more about the media's need for a story.

The media is a monster out of control. They can turn a small rain into a hurricane for ratings!!! And remember, as they proudly say, we interrupted your favorite programs to constantly tell you it is storming outside? Like we couldn't figure that out on our own? Of course, just this week my employer posted an opportunity for us to take a "Severe Weather Class" so we could recognize severe weather? Somebody has way too much money to waste in this country!

As a biology teacher, I am glad to see things that are anatomically correct.
