They are beauties, but I do not consider them as coins. To me, they must have 1 purpose for their lives: paying bills. These coins struck for collectors are only made for getting foreign dollars. As I used to work in an auction house myself, take my advise: don't consider them as valuable gadgets , they are make-belief.

I agree to a certain extant that this was made for collectors. But if this coin is legal currency in Tuvalu, not that I would want to use this beautiful coin as such. Than It is a coin.

Most inhabitants will never know the actual existence of this coin, due to the fact that it has been struck outside Tuvalu Borders in such low quantities. Therefore, many collectors buy these thingies before the entire amount of coins will reach Tuvalu market. In that case, regarding for instance the famous Liberian dollars, I personally do not see them as coins comparable to your American Silver Commemorative halfdollars and dollars.

Thank you for your honest opinion valutarick and I'm sorry you feel this way about the coins,I for one love them and yes the inhabitants of Tuvalu will probably not see them but as a coin there great and as a collectors item even better,I believe that the C.O.W. thread needs some motivation and I did hope these coins were what it needed so if anyone has some coins for C.O.W. please post them we would like to see them Thanks and regards. That is a nice looking coin. Is it made of silver?
I understand not wanting to count it as a coin as it never really circulates in Tuvalu. However, the US mint produces all of those proof coins with an S mint mark that are not really intended for circulation either (although they are circulated occasionally). I just think that this is not so different from proofs and bullion coins.
That said, if I was personally trying to collect a type set from Tuvalu, I would probably only collect the circulating coins - but that is just my preference.

I think it's a gorgeous coin!! I also understand that some coins are minted just for collectors. But that, to me, just makes the hobby available for all types of collectors. Some will like, and will collect, the uncirculated, rare collector coins and some won't, preferring to collect circulated coins. It's all good. There is plenty of room in our hobby for everyone.

I have to agree with valutaric in that they are not made as "coin of the realm" to circulate. Also the commemorated events do not have any great connection to the issuing country, so why are they choosing this to commemorate this?
But on the other hand, they are very well done. If you enjoy them then that is the "value" you will get from them. A good rule is to Collect what you like. It may or may not increase in value but you will have the joy of owning it and appreciating it regardless of what the value does.
Besides when I Googled Tuvalu to see where it is located I find that they need the money because if Global Warming happens as predicted, then these atoll islands will be completely flooded.
