Hello Everyone! Here is an old ebay Cheapie; I think it's probably the last struck 1809 C-1 Half Cent, with a HUGE rimbreak at the bottom reverse. The Berry under the R is in the right place for the 1809 C-1 it's (the only die in the series like this). It can't be 1828-up, doesn't quite match the 1809 C-3 and the 1826 C-1. The late state 1809 C-1 has a diecrack at the tops of ICA... I think this was a pocket-piece; the exposed bubbles tell us that-in normal circulation it would have been retired years before looking like this. The rimbreak starts at ICA, and travel to the U of UNI... the really interesting thing about that, is that the U is both Over and at the same time is Level with the break (you can see it terminating behind the UN). That's my take... what's yours? All replies/thoughts are Welcome. Edited by Oldgrouchyguy 06/10/2025 2:36 pm

That is a real challenge to attribute. The foot of the N of UNITED does not look to be in the right location in relation to the leaf tip below it. For that reason, I don't think it is an 1809 C-1. Not sure what it is though.

PHIL310: Huh, yup I missed that; I was looking at the Berry and base of IC. It may be an 1826 C-1... Thank You for your picture!

I found my 1809 C1 on ebay also. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It had just been listed as a buy it now unattributed for the price of a common variety. Never thought I would have one of these. Here's the full side photos.

The gradual transition from the sides to the center of the " Cud" convinces me that this is post mint damage. Cuds always show a cliff drop. The only mint made phenomenon that could manufacture this is demonstrated on the 1808 S-277 where a major die break and sink took place. But this does not match your coin to any degree. Did you purchase this coin from ebay or did you list it there?

jacrispies: actually, it has the same "dent" seen here on a Terminal 1803 C-2, because it's still a Retained Cud. How would you explain Lettering that is both over and behind the break? No, it was purchased there. I would never "promote" ANY Sales on this site, Thank You

I'm sorry I don't think I can debate whether this is a Retained Cud or not. There differences are clear between yours and certified examples. Regarding ebay -- the reason why I ask is because this coin may have been on ebay for a couple of years. I could be mistaken for this specific coin, but that seller lists primarily damaged coins that sit and never sell. He has a specific style of photography that involves closeups and mass cropping to avoid bringing attention to the fatal damage on his coins. If that isn't a red flag why your coin is simply damage... there is no discussion. Anyway, best of luck.

I don't know about it being on ebay for "a couple of years" I purchased it well over a year ago, almost two, and is was a New Listing, so I don't know what to tell you, jacrispiesIt may "look different", but I have it in hand and am very familiar with such coins (I have a deep Like for Early U.S. Copper, having Chaired two National EAC Conventions)

As far as neat purchases on ebay are concerned, they are Legion. Bought a multi-struck in-an-out of collar 1862 IHC, on a severely cracked planchet, for .99, and that coin was in a 7 day auction. Stuff pops up all the time, right out of the woodwork. You just need to know what you are looking at The Famous Retained Cud of the 1802 JR-4 Bust Dime
