Dear friends,
I want to share the latest purchase of S. Severus Denarius Emesa RIC VI 435.
Obverse: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right.
Reverse: T R P III IMP V COS II, Trophy consisting of helmet, cuirass, shields.
two captives seated back-to-back at its base, each wearing peaked cap
and long robe. The coin is worn, and I could not see COS (II?) at the end of the reverse legend.
There are not much S. Severus Denarius Emesa RIC VI 435 of that legend and I could not find the same die to see clearly COS II. Please help to attribute the coin. May be these are die breaks?

Hi. Your reverse suffers from an off-centre, uneven strike. Lots of what is not visible is due to this bad strike. The rest is down to good old-fashioned wear.
Does the missing "T AVG COS" from the obverse correspond to the large area from 1200 - 0500 on the reverse?
I have no doubt at all that the reverse legend did end COS II but I have not been able to find a reverse die in my records. In fact there are so many reverse dies I have not found too may die matches at all. I suspect that type this was produced in quite some volume compared to some of the earlier issues.

I have a couple of examples in my collection.

The following coin being badly chipped.

I have what I consider to be an interesting contemporary "barbarous" imitation of the type.

Maybe I found the same die denarius. It's COS II .
