I just opened an uncirculated 2023 no mint mark roll of pennies. Under the scope I noticed that most coins in the roll appeared doubled, which I do not think, (under todays minting process), is possible. So, most likely they are damaged. I then searched and found similar errors(?) being sold on ebay as DDOs for good money. So please, can someone help explain this anomaly. Thanks

This question appears frequently on these LSCs ... I think it is most likely DDD and light induced doubling.

I agree, there is probably a degree of light reflection, since these are none circulated cents. But the similarities on the other coins in the roll make me think more than lighting is going on. Also, the anomalies on these coins do not match the four examples of Die Attrition presented by "Errors and Variety's" in his excellent tutorial. I hope others provide some additional insight. Thanks

Yes - definitely Die Deterioration. You can see the "Lines" right down the middle of the letters and numbers. Not serifs.

Definitely Die Deterioration going on and light induced doubling as well. Don't trust all the sellers on ebay. Lots of mislabeled coins on there, along with just Post Mint Damaged coins being sold as "errors".
Errers and Varietys.

No an error or doubled die. You will see that in different years of Lincoln Shield Cents. As everyone said most likely DDD.

I'm curious about why this couldn't be possible with today's minting technology? Also, A1agrl if your willing to part with one I would like to examine, whether it's DDD or shadows or whatever I think it looks pretty interesting!

Quote: Also, A1agrl if your willing to part with one I would like to examine, Well if worse comes to worse, go to the bank and ask if they have "new" cent rolls. As hard as the mint was pushing them dies to produce the Billions of Shield cents that are in circulation your you're bound to find them with DDD

I agree with it being DDD.

Hey Marve65, you bring up a really good point that I have been noticing on all post COVID, maybe even just shield cents, but what I see a lot of is what I believe to be cleaned up dies, like the mint is not very clear on the devices for a lot of these? Maybe that's due to the mint trying to stretch the dies to the multiple billions level?

Quote: Maybe that's due to the mint trying to stretch the dies to the multiple billions level? Now a days cent dies strike between 300,000 to 500,000 before wearing out because the copper plated zinc planchets are relativley "soft" compared to the nickels and clad planchets. Have even heard if dies are taken care of they can produce up to 1 million cents - but I have no way of proving that. So it takes many die pairs to strike upwards of 1 billion cents.

This looks very similar to a 2023 cent I posted about last week. It was determined to be DDD and light induced doubling. See attached.

Marve65, thanks for the information about die lifecycle, I do understand multiple dies sets will be used to get to the billlions mark and when they are trying to make a die last longer don't they buff and polish (not sure exactly how it's done) to extend die life? Shown from not as sharp looking minting on devices? Thanks for all the information, the CCF is awesome!

Thanks all for your comments. I think this is intriguing, and I'm going to pursue it a bit further. I picked up 4 boxes of uncirculated pennies and several rolls have this doubled look. Whether a DDO or a DDD, I think it would be interesting to find out, and I may send it for verification.
