I recently purchased a blank nickel album from Dansco, which I thought would be great for housing a sort of general nickel collection composed of my Buffalo nickels, Liberty nickels and uh... I'm not sure what else.

Shield nickels seem interesting. As well as "half dimes." But the cost is quite up there it seems.

I noticed there really doesn't even seem to be that many Shield nickels that were minted. At least in terms of year and mint mark.

The album is a four page album. Buffalo nickels consist of two pages, Liberty nickels one, and the last page is obviously just free with I think 35 slots. This leaves 35 slots to fill in whatever nickels I choose.

Any advice?

You can some Shield nickels in there. It is a short run, so it will not fill the page. Shorter when you consider only 14 of them are what would be called affordable.

Not sure if you knew this, but Half Dimes are smaller than regular dimes, so the nickel holes are way too big for them.

You could just leave the page open for when you eventually get into varieties and errors.

I'll echo jbuck's final point: errors, varieties and flaws. Quite a few nickels have lamination errors and roller marks and other issues. Do be sure and look at yours under magnification. I had good enough eyes to see dates without assistance for years, but now I need reading glasses up close. But to see repunched mint marks (RPMs) and the like, it really helps to magnify.
Do not read this sentence.

I'm not really planning on getting into them personally. Idk, it's just not really my thing. I wouldn't mind having a coin or two, but like a whole page of them just doesn't appeal to me personally.
I wouldn't mind having a page full of different variations. but uh, if "nickels" really only go back to Shield nickels only, I can't imagine having enough to fill that page up.

I'll give it some time and think on it. I purchased I believe an 1883 Shield nickel today that was fairly affordable at under 10 dollars.

If you get Shield nickels they will be loose in the coin holes - they are 20.5mm compared to the 21.2 that all other nickels are.
