Hello to everyone!

This is going to be a long shot but nothing ventured nothing gained!
Did you personally or did your family visit the 1960 New York British Exhibition?

And if so, do you have some photographs of the Royal Mint stand? I'd like to gather some evidence of that stand and how/which coins it sold. Anything will be valuable for preservation's sake so don't be shy.

The only photo I was able to find online is the following which I believe is the moment in which "[..] Prince Philip stood by Vice-President Nixon looks through a jeweller's glass at a British gold coin" as the New York Herald Tribune captioned.

Thanks to anyone!

I was there, Joe, but I never got to meet Prince Philip!

I've got only these two bits of memorabilia that have survived all these years, neither of which, alas, is a photo of The Royal Mint's "booth," as we Noo Yawkers would have called it.

Have you tried these folks: press.office@royalmint.com?

Meanwhile, you can see my complete story here in an earlier CCF post..

Ah , 1960 the time when the world was putting itself back together after
a destructive World War. Sanity and real values were recognized as qualities.
The Western World actually manufactured well made goods .
When a real hero was President ( IKE) and a young dynamic
JFK was just around the corner!
The greatest generation in its prime!
Anyone who visited the 1960 Exhibition in NYC is either long gone
or too young to remember.
I would have been six at the time!

Haven't you heard? Eighty is the new sixty!

(Maybe you missed my reply above? I was in 8th grade at the time.)

Woah! Thank you daltonista! I wasn't expecting to get a "hit" so soon and with someone who was there!

My main assumption was that there must be quite a lot of photos taken at that time and stashed away in the drawers of "numismatic" families in the States! If my family had visited I would probably find some photos too!

daltonista's medal is the coin that was struck at the booth and was mistaken as a gold one in the papers (extracts from the 1960 RM Report: https://goccf.com/t/479888#4309302 talking about the event from their perspective). It's the same coin that was held in the photo above by Nixon!

Also, yes, I'm in contact with the RMM but their photos will take some time to dig up as they have been handed over to their National Archives. But as far as I understood are probably more centered around VIPs who visited, rather than the booth itself (such photos would have showed the products being sold, etc).

daltonista, do you remember any details from the booth itself? What was there, etc? Thanks!

Well my mother was born in 1942 - she would have been 18 at that time and 'could' have gone - and she is STILL smart as a wick and would have remembered it if she had gone..

I should have remembered that, it was barely a year ago!

Sorry, Joe, I can't really add anything of substance. It was 65 years ago...

I vaguely recall being directed to a shorter, quicker line than my classmates were stuck on because I was the only "YN" in our group and wanted to actually buy one of the "silver" crowns.

I did have a five-minute conversation with a pleasant gentleman from The Royal Mint who put a lot of effort into explaining to a dozen or so of us kids how the pound sterling system worked. The coin I'd just bought did say "Five Shillings" on it, after all...wish I could remember what I paid for it!

Many of us spent the rest of the school year trying our best to imitate the great British accents we'd been hearing all day (for the first time) at the Exhibition.

So, no physical details for you, I'm afraid. Mainly crowds, food, and all the insufferable cultural/social/hormonal stuff that you'd expect on an 8th-grade field trip...great fun, in other words!

Joe, don't forget to share your findings with us!

Thank you daltonista for sharing your memories with us! Appreciated!

I will surely share any findings!

By the way, adding to the thread for posterity some pics of the catalog of the event which is currently on ebay ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384438606692 ). We can see there where the RM booth was located!
