This looks fire damaged to me. Is there another more common source of this kind of discoloration?

Yes, post-strike damage of an environmental nature. Possibly the result of being 'buried' in soil for some time. Can't rule out fire exposure.

Probably in the ground at one time. I agree with both comments.

Make this a pocket piece and let the circulation cameo save it.

No way to tell the exact reason for it. But I like jbuck's idea for a pocket piece.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm intuiting from the term "pocket piece" that we're talking about circulating it in my pocket to wear the dark toning off the high points. Is that right? I feel torn about the idea. I see the wisdom in it. Nothing is going to remove all that dark colour without fully cleaning it, so might as well pretty it up as much as possible. It just feels wrong somehow. Also, I worry that I might accidentally lose it. Maybe I'll put it among some coins to wear in my house pants.

I'd leave it as is. It will always be a "details" coin.

Just noticed: seems to be a "Rotated Die" error/variety.
