I came across this 1944 D Wheat penny in some change I got at a local gas station. It was pretty well coated with some type of oil or grease so I got a soft rag and started to get the goo off. What I was left with was a gold colored coin. The whole coin is gold colored. And it weighs just at 4 grams. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

to the CCF I can say for sure it's been damaged along the way. How accurate is your scale? 4 grams is quite a bit heavy as it should weigh ~3.1 grams. It's best practice to state the denomination in your thread title. You did a nice job of stating date and mint so well done there. I'll ask a Moderator to edit this title for you to include the denomination

To CCF! Your coin has been damaged after it left the U.S. mint. PMD.

If you are going to weigh coins, an ACCURATE scale to at least two decimal points is required. I doubt very much if your cent weighs exactly 4 grams. What are you using for a scale?

Any possibility you could get us a nice, clear closeup of the date and mint mark, like I'm showing you?

@Breeze13 - - Colour perhaps caused by environmental conditions. Should weigh 3.11 gms so you scale may be off or coin was coated/plated after minting. .

Thanks for the tips. My scale seems pretty accurate. I've weighed a lot of other coins I have and they weigh what they're supposed to.

After looking at the fuzzy photo it looks like it could be a 1944D DDO-001?
