I've read that it's impossible to have a proof (S) repunched mint mark or S/S because they are not hand punched. So I present to you photos of odd looking mint marks on a couple of 1984-S pennies. Please explain what this could be. My thought- with the amount of depression inward surrounding the mint mark, it would lead me to believe that it was hammered in afterwards, unlike the level surrounding metal of the date. Therefore indicating it may have been hammered on afterwards? Thanks in advance. \
I suggest the answer lies somewhere in the field of copper plating issues. The next to last image shows similar plating issues associated with the digits in the date.
I believe also to be a platting issue , help me on something , when you say "hammered in afterwards , you mean on the die itself before striking the planchett or after the strike ?
