Hi,

I was going through an old pile of coins I never got round to identifying and came across this - which I must have picked up before I started collecting coins from the Papal States. It's very worn but there is enough left on the obverse to identify it.

I think it's a baiocco of Innocent XII showing St. Paul (or St. Miniatus) with cross and branch. I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the reverse except the legend is pretty clear as FERO ET DVM - short for FERO ET DVM SUSTINEO "I bear and while I endure"

I can't seem to find anything on Numista or acsearch.info either. Would anyone have any information about this?

many thanks

Interesting piece. Maybe a token or medal?

I don't see the kneeling figure having Paul's normal attributes (book and sword), though it could be a depiction of some other part of his story. There are medals with an image of his conversion on the road to Damascus, but this does not resemble them.

Long beard could be an Old Testament figure. There is a papal coin wtih King David playing a harp not too different in shape from the object at left https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12315697
But the figure on your coin does not wear a crown.

Maybe someone else will have an idea

Thanks for responding - I hadn't considered a medal or token but it might very well be some sort of commemorative issue. I had assumed a coin because of the amount of wear - which is considerable and (I think) the mint masters initials "IK"

However the legends on the clear side don't quite make sense and Innocent XII was about the best I could come up with and at 28mm it seems too big for a quattrino.

There's definitely a tree/branch to the right. The figure is bearded and bald and robed and possibly kneeling - but might be standing. The object to the left appears oval cartouche in shape and certainly does appear to be a harp with the figures hands extended in that way. If it is a harp the figure is more likely to be standing - possibly?

A pity the other side is so worn. I'm not even sure of the orientation but guessed it based on having the legend start at about 1 o'clock - which as you can see from the clipped flan makes the striking orientation a bit random..

That's a great bit of detective work. Definitely the same obverse and explains the odd legend.

many thanks

Would you believe I even had the right reference book for this - It's in Michael Mitchiners "The Medieval Period and Nurembrrg Jetons Medalets and tokens Vol 1 reference book - although admittedly I rarely consult it.

Picture below for reference - so at least we know what the reverse is.
